87.5 miles 3,070 ft ascent
Before we left camp on PEI this morning, it rained heavily (at 03:30) but let up well before breakfast. We need to get our gear dried out, but it could have been much worse. These Canadian butter tarts helped us forget the rainstorm.
Today's ride was split into two about equal parts by a ferry boat ride of just under 1.5 hours. The riding terrain was rolling hills.
We rode along our old friend the Trans Canada Highway 1 to Woods Island Ferry port to catch the ferry from PEI to Nova Scotia.
We spotted this Bar-be-Que joint along the way, complete with a corn maze and fresh USA Southern pies.
At the ferry port we purchased lobster rolls. They were delicious, and I enjoyed the lobster roll more than the lobster tail in camp at Saint-Louis de Kent. Chunks of lobster with mayonnaise based sauce and lettuce in a bun make a real treat!
The ferry was unloading when we arrived and we waited to board.
There were hosts of cormorants in the ferry port.
I took this shot of the lighthouse on Woods Island from the ferry.
When we stepped off the ferry, we entered our 9th Canadian province, Nova Scotia.
Nova Scotia celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II by naming this highway in her honor. Queen Elizabeth ascended the throne in 1952, celebrated her Diamond Jubilee (60th year) in 2012, and in 2015, she surpassed Queen Victoria's record of 63 years, 216 days on the throne.https://www.leicestershirevillages.com/what-is-the-diamond-jubilee-of-queen-elizabeth-ii/
Apparently the deer in Nova Scotia jump higher than deer in other Canadian provinces. This guy looks pretty enthusiastic! Makes me wonder about the charging moose too.
The next three days of riding are in the mountains of Nova Scotia, and probably the most difficult three day stretch of cycling in the entire tour. Tomorrow we "get acquainted" with the mountains, then "get tested" riding two days on the Cabot Trail. This is the home stretch. You are invited to come along to be there when we make it all the way!
